The club initially started as an ad-hoc gathering of like minded divers on a Sunday afternoon at the Ammanford Pool. It was to encourage local people to start learning to snorkle. If people wanted to learn to dive we took them to Llanelli SAC. These pool sessions, which were initiated by Hugo Lloyd and Dewi Rees in late in early 1993, carried on for a number of years.

In 1996 a group of us got together - namely Des Phillips, Dewi Rees, Nigel Rees, Keith Price and Andrew Abrons - to form our own sub aqua club. This took some time as BSAC rules dictated we have at least 12 members. In late 1997 we managed to secure enough members to become a BSAC affiliated club - Ammanford SAC 2229. At the time we were fortunate enough to have two members that had their own boats. So sea diving was not a problem.

The club met weekly at Ammanford Pool and as members started to increase we applied for a Community Chest grant for £1,000 to buy new equipment so we could offer training for new members.

In 1998 the club applied for a grant from the Sports Council to purchase a new RHIB (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat at a cost  of £16,000. We succeeded in securing anm £8,000 grant from the Sport Council leaving the club to find £8,000. The next two years we worked hard as members to get the necessary funds. We taught people to play Octapush and also ran The Duke of Edinburgh courses to the ATC Cadets to raise funds.

Eventually we were able to go ahead with the purchase of a new Humber RHIB with a 150hp Yamaha Engine and we fitted a Radio Echo Sounder and GPS. We also manufactured our own stainless steel fuel tank. We took possession of the boat in March 2000 towing it all the way from Hull.

In 2011 we raised sufficient funds to buy a 4x4 in 2011 to tow the boat, and ever since we have been able to go on regular dive trips around Pembrokeshire and the Gower.

In 2014 the club bought a second hand compressor so that we could fill our own cylinders.

More recently (May 2016), we managed to secure further funding from the Mynydd y Betws Wind Farm community benefit fund and the Churches in Wales fund to allow us to to purchase a second club RHIB. Our hope is that this will allow us to significantly grow our club membership.

Club History

We are a small, friendly and active diving club, based in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire with easy access to the west coast of Wales and the Gower peninsula. We use the club RHIB to dive most weekends and occasional evenings and are able to venture further afield towing with our own 4x4.

During 2015 we managed a total of 25 days diving from the Club boat along with trips to the Sound of Mull, the Red Sea, Bikini Atoll and Truk Lagoon. In addition we also completed a number of shore and training dives, we are probably the most active dive club in the area.

One of our dives was featured on the BBC's Countryfile TV programme where our underwater litter picking exploits were broadcast to the nation.

Our dive calendar is orientated around West Wales, but we often venture further afield.

We meet socially in Ammanford on a Wednesday evening and also have a good social calendar with events such as barbecues and boat based pub tours.

If you are interested in learning to dive, we run regular try dives and training events so please get in touch via our contact page.

For qualified divers who would like to join us, whether as a member or just for the day, please forward your details and we'll get straight back to you.

About us

Ammanford Sub Aqua Club - BSAC 2229

We meet weekly, every Wednesday, from 7:30pm at the Betws Rugby Club in Ammanford. Committee meetings are held monthly on the last Wednesday of the month - and to ensure we can hold a meeting with minimal interruiption, committee members take it in turns to host the event at their home.

Club membership fees are £120 per year plus you'll need to become a member of BSAC and their annual subscription is £60.

As described above, we have two RHIBs capable of taking 8 fully kitted divers, and we typically dive around Penbrokeshire launching from Porthgain or Porthclais harbours or from the slip at Gelliswick Milford Haven. Weather and tides permitting, we'll dive as many weekends as we can between March and November.

We also have our own club compressor for air-fills and we have eight sets of diving kit plus club cylinders for use by new members and trainees. We do not, however, provide wet suits or dry suits.

We have six qualified Instructors and six Assistant Instructors. All training is delivered by the club and the only costs involved are the course materials supplied by BSAC (as an example the training pack for the first diving qualification, Ocean Diver, is £40).
